A dramatic branch can make or break an aquascape, but it is hard to judge a layout when your centerpiece keeps launching itself toward the surface. The better answer is that natural wood needs time to become fully waterlogged, and the amount of time depends on the species, density, size, and condition of the piece.
Floating driftwood is normal with newly added hardscape. It is not usually a sign that the wood is defective, unsafe, or unsuitable for a planted tank. Still, it needs to be handled correctly. A branch that pops free after you plant your foreground or add livestock can uproot plants, scratch glass, shift stones, and disrupt the composition you worked hard to build.
Why Is Aquarium Driftwood Floating in a New Tank?
Wood floats because its internal structure contains air. Even dense aquarium driftwood has pores, channels, cracks, and hollow spaces that hold air when it is dry or only partially hydrated. Until water works into those spaces and replaces the trapped air, the wood remains more buoyant than the water around it.
The wood’s density matters. Dense pieces such as many spider wood branches or compact hardwood roots may sink relatively quickly, while lighter, more porous pieces can take much longer. Large branching structures also have more enclosed areas where air can linger. The Air Is Not Always Obvious

Should You Boil Aquarium Driftwood?
Boiling can speed up the initial soaking process, help loosen trapped air, and reduce the amount of tannin released once the wood enters the aquarium. For small to medium pieces that fit safely in a large pot, it can be useful preparation.
However, boiling is not mandatory, and it is not practical for every statement piece. Forcing a large branch into a pot, overheating it on one side, or trying to boil wood with delicate thin branches can cause cracking or damage the shape you selected. For premium driftwood, preserving the character of the piece is often more valuable than saving a few days of soaking time.
If you boil wood, use plain water only. Do not add bleach, soap, salt, cleaners, or household disinfectants. These products can leave residues that are dangerous for shrimp, fish, and beneficial bacteria. After boiling, allow the wood to cool completely before placing it in the aquarium or handling it for attachment.
Safe Ways to Keep Driftwood Down
If your aquascape cannot wait for the wood to sink on its own, secure it with aquarium-safe materials. The goal is to hold the wood in its intended position without creating visible hardware or pressure points against the aquarium glass.
Attaching the base of the wood to a flat piece of slate is one of the most reliable methods. The slate can be buried beneath substrate and supported by surrounding stones, giving the hardscape a stable foundation. Use aquarium-safe screws or plastic cable ties where they can be concealed. Stainless steel hardware may be appropriate when it is specifically rated for aquarium use, but avoid unknown metal screws that can corrode or leach into the water.
You can also wedge driftwood beneath carefully positioned hardscape stones. This works well for layouts where the wood appears to emerge from a rocky slope or where stones naturally conceal the anchor point. The stones must be stable on their own, not balanced on loose substrate or resting against aquarium glass. A floating branch can create surprising leverage, so test the entire structure before planting.

A carefully chosen hardscape foundation protects the livestock, the tank, and the visual balance of the layout.
