A nano tank has nowhere to hide bad equipment choices. In a 5-, 10-, or 15-gallon aquascape, an oversized intake can dominate the composition, excessive current can uproot delicate stems, and a loud motor can spoil an otherwise peaceful desktop display. The best nano aquarium filters keep water clear and biologically stable without stealing attention from your stones, wood, plants, or livestock.

For a high-end planted layout, filter selection is not simply about gallons per hour. It is about matching flow pattern, media capacity, maintenance needs, and visual footprint to the tank you are building. A low-tech shrimp cube has different needs than a CO2-injected rimless aquascape packed with fine-leaved stems.

What a Nano Filter Needs to Do Well

Every aquarium filter handles mechanical filtration, biological filtration, and some degree of water movement. In a nano aquarium, those jobs become more sensitive because the water volume is small. A missed water change, decaying leaf, or overfed shrimp colony can affect water quality quickly.

Mechanical media catches visible debris, from plant trimmings to fine substrate dust. Biological media gives beneficial bacteria a protected place to process ammonia and nitrite. Flow distributes oxygen, nutrients, and CO2 around the aquascape. The right filter balances all three without turning a carefully arranged nano tank into a current-swept channel.

Do not choose purely by the manufacturer’s tank-size rating. Those ratings often assume a lightly stocked aquarium with clean filter media. Dense planting, active fish, soil-based substrates, and hardscape with many tight pockets all add demand. A filter rated for a slightly larger aquarium is usually helpful, provided you can soften or direct its output.

There is no single best unit for every small aquarium. The strongest choice depends on whether your priority is an invisible-looking display, maximum biological media, shrimp safety, or easy weekly upkeep.

Hang-on-back filters for accessible, adaptable filtration

A quality hang-on-back filter is often the most practical option for a 5- to 15-gallon planted tank. It is easy to remove for cleaning, leaves room inside the aquarium for hardscape, and can hold more customizable media than many compact internal filters.

For a dedicated shrimp breeding tank, a small sponge filter can be the right primary filter. In a high-detail aquascape, it is more often used as supplemental biological filtration or as temporary support while a new filter matures. Its biggest drawback is aesthetic: even a neatly placed sponge can interrupt a minimalist layout.

Flow Matters More Than the Box Rating

Excessive flow is one of the most common mistakes in nano aquariums. A filter may be technically appropriate for the tank volume while still producing a harsh current at the outlet. Watch your plants after installation. If carpeting plants lift, shrimp constantly brace against the current, or fish avoid one side of the aquarium, the flow needs adjustment.

Aim the return toward the glass, position it just below the surface, or use a spray bar when appropriate. Surface movement should be visible but not violent. In a CO2-injected planted aquarium, enough circulation is needed to carry dissolved CO2 throughout the tank, yet too much agitation can drive it off.

Hardscape changes the equation. A stone ridge, dense driftwood root structure, or thick epiphyte planting can create stagnant areas behind the layout. Place the intake where it can collect debris, then use the outflow to move water across the front and around the hardscape rather than blasting directly into it.

Media Setup for Cleaner Water and Better Stability

Many nano filters arrive with cartridges designed for quick replacement. For a planted aquarium, a reusable media arrangement is usually the better long-term approach. Start with a coarse sponge to catch larger debris, add biological media where space allows, and finish with a small amount of fine floss only when you want extra clarity after planting or maintenance.

Avoid replacing all filter media at once. Most of the beneficial bacteria live on surfaces throughout the aquarium, including the substrate and hardscape, but the filter still holds a valuable portion of that colony. Rinse sponges and media gently in removed aquarium water, not under chlorinated tap water.

Activated carbon is not essential for most planted freshwater tanks. It can be useful after medication or to remove a specific contaminant, but it does not replace consistent water changes. The space is often better used for sponge or biological media.

Shrimp-Safe Filtration Is Non-Negotiable

If your aquascape includes neocaridina, caridina, or a growing shrimp colony, cover every intake with a fine prefilter sponge. Tiny shrimplets will find surprisingly small gaps. A prefilter also catches leaves and detritus before they enter the main filter, making service faster and protecting the impeller from buildup.

Choose the pore size carefully. Very fine sponges offer excellent shrimplet protection but can clog faster in a heavily planted tank. A medium-fine sponge is usually the best balance for routine use. Clean it whenever flow slows, using old tank water and a gentle squeeze.

Build the Filter Around the Aquascape

A filter should support the composition, not force compromises in it. Before filling the aquarium, decide where the intake, outflow, heater, and CO2 diffuser will sit. A corner internal filter may disappear behind a tall crypt or wood branch. A canister with glass pipes may be ideal for a clean negative-space layout. A hang-on-back can be the most sensible choice when easy access matters more than an equipment-free view.
